Kings Hill’s men’s 1st team showed great character to gain their first 3 points on the road for the season to cap an impressive first month back in the Premier Division.
On their 4G pitch in South East London, Thamesmead’s young, technical side started by far the sharpest and Kings Hill were on the back foot from the early stages. It wasn’t long before Thamesmead took the lead following them winning back possession deep in Kings Hill territory resulting in a move ending in a neat turn and finish by the Thamesmead centre forward. The pressure continued on Kings Hill’s back line and, in truth, Thamesmead could have gone further in front during this spell.
Kings Hill showed strong resolve to stay in the match and, following a stoppage for injury to goalkeeper Harvey Mills, were able to regroup and start to bring more intensity into their play. This paid dividends just before half time when an Ollie Aston got a toe ahead of the Thamesmead keeper, to a drilled free kick from Morgan Williamson to put Kings Hill level. Kings Hill carried the intensity levels into the second half and, kicking with the wind, were now the team in the ascendency. Substitute Richard Davies on one wing and George Sibley on the other, were causing problems down both sides with Aston, Charlie Hatton and Macca all going close. Despite the pressure, Kings Hill’s back line of George Ellis, Eroms Amros and Max Sutton, supported by goalkeeper Harvey Mills, had to stay focussed against Thamesmead’s pacy front line. With around 15 minutes to play, Kings Hill got their breakthrough when a cross shot from Sibley was tapped in at the far post by Davies. Thamesmead pushed for an equaliser but the back line, now including Cameron Croucher, wasn’t really troubled and Kings Hill stood firm to gain a valuable 3 points.
A fantastic result, which was testament to the togetherness and strength in depth of the squad.
Reflecting on the win, Patrick Lee said:
“It was lovely to finish the month with another 3 points on the board and to be in 4th position. Its been a heavy month on the players and they’ve had to show resilience throughout in different ways.
We started the game quite poorly really, and we could of found ourselves in a very difficult situation with how attacking Thamesmead were, luckily enough an injury and drinks break allowed us as management and boys to regroup and we came out a different side, a game of 2 halves in one half!
We had some unbelievable chances throughout the second half really and managed to keep Thamesmead at bay for near enough the rest of the game, couple of set pieces they had with first and second phase but nothing too much.
As mentioned its been an intense schedule and we’ve seen the toll on the squad its already taken, but we’ve got such great depth in our group that we’ve got through it together and provided the results when needed, we’re disappointed not to be level on points with teams above really, theres a long way still to go in the season, we’ve only just dipped our toe in really!”
