Late Romzy equaliser earns Kings Hill a 2–2 at Long Lane

Our men’s first team gained a well deserved point at high flying Long Lane to continue their good form and move to second in the table. On a sunny afternoon in South East London, the quality within Kings Hill’s squad was evident as they coped with ten absentees to put in a strong performance, going toe to toe with a team who are undefeated since mid August. In contrast to recent weeks, Kings Hill came out of the blocks sharpest with the constant running from Charlie Hatton and energy from George Sibley, who was moved from his normal wing back role, in behind causing the home defence problems. It was Hatton who gave Kings Hill the lead as he collected the ball 30 yards out before advancing to hit a left foot strike from outside the box, which bounced in off the underside of the bar. Kings Hill continued to press, with wing backs George Ellis and Cameron Croucher providing good support to Sibley, Hatton and Will Seage. Indeed Hatton came close midway through the half when he broke free, and fired narrowly wide into the side netting. However, Long Lane grew into the game and with some good delivery into the box started to build some pressure, needing a fine save from Harvey Mills at one point to keep Kings Hill in front. Despite the pressure, the back three of Romzy, skipper George Hawkons and Ryan Young, with Keaton Courtman marshalling in front of them, looked comfortable until four minutes before half time Kings Hill gave away possession in midfield allowing Long Lane to break and tuck away an equaliser.

Kings Hill brought on Indy Robinson for Nathaniel Waul at the break and the second half continued in similar fashion to the first with two evenly matched teams both working incredibly hard and both having opportunities. Kings Hill thought they had got their noses back in front just after the hour mark when Hatton got onto a neat through ball and smashed home a great finish. However, the assistant referee adjudged that he was offside and, after showing his frustration at the decision, Hatton was sin binned for 10 minutes. This handed some impetus to the home side but Kings Hill had nearly got through the period of being a man down when Long Lane nicked possession deep in the visitors half and broke clear to go 2-1 up with a tidy clipped finish. It would have been easy for Kings Hill to have felt sorry for themselves at this stage and to let the game drift away, but instead, with numbers on the pitch evened up, they showed character to push again. Substitutes Richard Davies and Matt Morse added further attacking impetus and Kings Hill grabbed a deserved equaliser on eighty six minutes when Hatton squared for Romzy, who had stayed forward following a free kick into the box, to apply a left foot finish sparking great celebrations. Both sides pushed for a winner in the remaining four minutes plus five more minutes of added time but neither could find the final touch and the game ended in a 2-2 draw. A fair result and a good advert for KCFL football.

“The game showed real togetherness again from the boys, Long Lane are a good side, credit to them, they move the ball well and with a purpose, causing us some issues where we were off it.
Charlie Hatton topped another good performance with an unbelievable goal, and I’m sure he felt quite disappointed with a goal called offside which was questionable truthfully, we all were unsure on it and he got sinbinned for his reaction, that was the turning point in the game as we lost the momentum we were building with 11 players and conceded unfortunately to behind.
The boys showed great character and spirit to still create a couple more chances and then get an equaliser was amazing, it was deserved.
